Does Your Medical Practice Need a HIPAA Security Risk Analysis?

A checklist can start a conversation. A risk analysis needs to examine the risks to your actual electronic patient information.

Start with applicability

The HIPAA Security Rule applies to covered entities and business associates. Many healthcare providers are covered entities because they conduct specified electronic transactions. Confirm your circumstances with qualified counsel rather than assuming every business handling health information has the same obligations.

Look across the practice

For regulated entities, risk analysis is a required implementation specification. Its scope includes potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all electronic protected health information the organization handles. An EHR vendor review alone does not cover the whole practice.

Turn analysis into action

Build an inventory, identify relevant threats and vulnerabilities, evaluate safeguards, and document risk levels and treatment decisions. Risk management follows through on those findings. Revisit the analysis when systems, threats, or operations change.

Bring useful evidence

Prepare a system list, vendor agreements, existing policies, access review records, and recovery documentation. Do not email patient records or passwords to arrange an initial consultation.
